What this means: the "just build it in Zapier" answer works, until it does not. The setup that runs on day one often stops on day three, and the economics change in October.

Two things distort these numbers if you read them straight down the column.
Billing units are not comparable. Zapier bills per task, where every step in a Zap counts separately. Make bills per operation, where every module counts. n8n bills per workflow execution regardless of how many steps it contains. The same Gmail-to-WhatsApp flow consumes very different amounts on each platform, and multi-step flows punish Zapier hardest.
Self-hosted n8n is free software, not a free solution. You supply the server, the Postgres database, the reverse proxy, the backups and the upgrades. Budget a small VPS and the hours.
